What compression actually changes — and what it can't fix
A video shot in 4K can weigh several hundred MB per minute: too heavy for WhatsApp, rejected as an email attachment, painfully slow to upload. Compressing a video shrinks that weight by re-encoding the picture, without changing its format or its dimensions — free, with no watermark, right in your browser.
Compress, resize or convert: which tool for which problem?
Three needs look alike but aren't solved the same way. Is your video too heavy in MB? That's this compressor. Is it the wrong size in pixels for a 9:16 export or a specific resolution? That's the resizer. Is it the wrong file format (a MOV that won't open on Windows, say)? That's the converter. The three combine well: resizing a 4K clip down to 1080p already shrinks its weight mechanically; compressing it afterward finishes the job.
What actually makes a video file heavy — and what lightens it
A video's file size comes down to three things: its resolution (pixel count), its duration, and its bitrate — how much data is spent on every second of picture. Compressing a video mainly means lowering that bitrate intelligently: the encoder finds the areas the eye won't miss (a flat sky, a blurred background) and strips data there, while protecting the detail that matters (faces, on-screen text, sharp motion).
Why the same setting shrinks two videos so differently
Two clips of the same length can react very differently to compression. A raw phone recording, shot at a high bitrate, can lose over half its weight with no visible difference. A video already exported for the web, or already compressed by a messaging app, has little left to strip — there simply isn't much slack remaining. Klipa checks this after processing and says so honestly: if re-encoding would not have helped, you get your original file back, never a fake "win".
What compression won't fix
Compressing a video lowers its bitrate, not its duration: a 20-minute recording will still weigh more than a 20-second clip, however well it's compressed. If the real problem is length — a raw meeting recording, unedited footage — trimming the unused parts first often does more for the file size than compression alone.
A free compressor, on Mac, Windows or anywhere else
Because everything runs in the browser, there is nothing to install — no QuickTime export settings to hunt through, no HandBrake presets to learn. Pick a level, Klipa re-encodes the file, and the compressed video is yours: no watermark, no branding added.
What the tool produces

How to compress a video in 3 steps
Upload the video to compress
Drop the oversized file: MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV or WebM. No account is needed to run a first compression.
Choose the compression level
Light to keep quality nearly untouched, Balanced for a solid middle ground, Maximum for the smallest possible file. Klipa encodes the video, then shows the size it actually reached.
Download the compressed video
Get the lighter file back, watermark-free, ready to send on WhatsApp, attach to an email or publish on your site.
Why compress your videos with Klipa
An honest saving, never inflated
How much you actually save depends on your source video: Klipa shows the real result after processing, and tells you plainly when a video is already optimized and won't shrink further.
Zero watermark on the result
The compressed video comes out clean: no logo, no branding added. It's your file, just lighter.
Three compression levels that actually differ
Light, Balanced or Maximum: each level genuinely changes how the picture is encoded, not just a marketing label on the same file. Pick Light for footage that will be watched up close, Maximum when only the file size matters.
No software to install, on Mac or PC
Everything happens in your browser: no QuickTime, no HandBrake, no app to download. Upload, pick a level, download — the same steps whether you're on macOS, Windows or a Chromebook.
When to compress a video
Compress a video on Mac without QuickTime or HandBrake
Native Mac tools bury the compression settings in export menus built for editors, not for a quick fix. Klipa does the same job from any browser, Mac included, with three plain-language levels instead of a bitrate slider — and the same page works identically on Windows or a Chromebook.
Compress a video for social media without losing quality
Instagram, TikTok and YouTube all re-compress what you upload — starting from an already-heavy file makes that second pass worse. Compress on Light first to hand the platform a clean, still-crisp source.
Compress a video for WhatsApp
WhatsApp compresses or rejects videos that are too heavy, especially when sent from a phone. Compressing the file first solves the problem in most cases — no need to trim the clip shorter than you want.
Attach a video to an email
Gmail caps attachments at 25 MB. Compress the video first and attach it directly to the message, instead of uploading it to a share link just to send a few seconds of footage.
Speed up a video published on a website
A heavy background or embedded video slows down page load. Compress it to speed up delivery, then resize it to the resolution your layout actually displays to save even more. Page speed also factors into search rankings, so a lighter video helps both visitors and search engines.

Compressing a video — frequently asked questions
How do I compress a video online for free?
Drop your video, pick a compression level, then download the result. No watermark is added, and Klipa shows the size actually reached before you keep the file. Compression puts no limit on how many files you run, with or without an account.
How do I compress a video without losing quality?
Pick the light level: it mainly strips data the eye won't notice, like flat areas or blurred motion, while protecting the sharpness of faces, on-screen text and fine detail. The stronger the setting, the more the loss gradually becomes visible, especially on a video that was already soft to begin with.
How much smaller does a compressed video get?
It depends entirely on the source: a raw phone recording can lose over half its weight, while a video already compressed for the web will barely shrink further. Klipa shows the real saving after processing, never a generic percentage promised in advance.
Can I compress a video on Mac without installing software?
Yes. Klipa runs entirely in the browser, so there is nothing to install on macOS — no digging through QuickTime's export panel, no HandBrake presets to configure. Upload the file, choose a level, and download the result a moment later.
Does the compressor add a watermark?
No. The compressed video comes out with no watermark at all, and no logo added to the frame. Unlike tools that keep a clean export behind a paid plan, Klipa applies this on the free tier too: it's your file, simply lighter.
Which video formats can I compress?
MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV and WebM as input, whether they come from a phone, a camera or editing software. The compressed video is always delivered as MP4 with H.264 encoding, the combination that plays most reliably across browsers, phones and TVs.
Compress a video for WhatsApp: how heavy is too heavy?
WhatsApp compresses or rejects videos above a size that varies by platform version and connection quality, and that limit has changed over time. Rather than chase a moving number, compress on Balanced or Maximum first: it resolves the vast majority of WhatsApp upload failures without shortening the clip.
What's the difference between compressing and converting a video?
Compressing shrinks the file size while keeping the same format. Converting changes the format itself, for instance a MOV shot on iPhone into a widely-playable MP4. The two combine well: our converter handles the format change, this compressor handles the weight.
What's the difference between compressing and resizing a video?
Compressing reduces the file size, in MB, without touching the picture's dimensions. Resizing changes the pixel size — 4K down to 1080p, say — which also happens to shrink the file as a side effect. Our resizer handles the pixels, this compressor handles the bitrate.
Are my videos kept after compression?
No. Both the original file and the compressed video are deleted from our servers automatically after a short delay. No copy is kept beyond that window, and no account is required for this automatic deletion to apply to your file.
What Creators Say
Compress a video, no software and no hidden compromise
Compressing a video online takes seconds: no software to install, no watermark on the result, and a size saving reported exactly as it is, never inflated. Shrink your MP4, MOV or AVI files so they finally go through on WhatsApp, by email or on your website — and if it's the picture's dimensions rather than its weight that's the problem, our resizer takes over from there.
